Ingredients
1lb.ground beef
1unitegg beaten
½cupdry bread crumbs
½teaspoonsalt
½teaspoonground black pepper
Instructions
In a medium bowl, whisk together the ground beef, the eggs, and the bread crumbs until well blended. Form into 4 patties, approximately ¾ inch thick.
Make patties using a ½ cup measuring cup.
Brush the patties with olive oil and let it rest until ready to cook
Set up your grill following the manufacturer’s instructions for for direct grilling. If you are using a charcoal grill, preheat to high heat using a ¾ or full filled chimney for about 15 minutes and rake the coals into a mound. Add fresh coal if/as needed, to build a hot fire. Pour about 1 tablespoon of olive oil on your skillet and preheat on high heat for about 10-15 minutes, or until oil begins to generate smoke.
Place cheese on buns and heat up in the oven at 300°F, for about 3-5 minutes.
Season with salt and pepper when ready to cook.
Sear the patties: about 3 minutes on each side, turning once.
Remove from grill and serve on buns with any toppings you desire!
Notes
If you add salt too early, it will draw out all the moisture from the beef and make it dry. Only season with salt right before you sear the patties. This will help to keep these homemade hamburgers juicy and flavorful. It's important to make sure that the skillet is hot before searing the burgers. If the skillet isn't hot enough, the burgers will stick to the pan and they won't get that nice sear. So be sure to preheat the skillet for at least 10-15 minutes before cooking. We recommend using a sharp cheddar cheese for this homemade hamburger recipe. The sharp flavor of the cheese pairs well with the savory flavors of the burger. However, feel free to use whatever type of cheese you like.
